Microsoft expands Norway site with 30,000 Nvidia chips

Microsoft will rent more data center capacity at Nscale’s campus in Narvik, Norway, including 30,000 additional Nvidia Vera Rubin chips, expanding a site that had been pitched to OpenAI under its Stargate plan.

Nscale, a neocloud provider, said the deal adds to Microsoft’s earlier US$6.2 billion commitment there, while OpenAI did not finalize a capacity agreement for the site.

OpenAI recently paused a similar Stargate project in the UK, citing energy and regulatory costs, though a spokesperson said it is still exploring capacity in Norway.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Microsoft’s deal fits a wider push to ease data center build and power limits

  • The move follows Microsoft’s recent roughly US$60 billion wave of spending on specialized “neocloud” providers, companies that rent out AI computing infrastructure 1.
  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the company’s biggest bottleneck is power and finishing data center construction fast enough. The pinch is less about chip supply and more about having powered sites ready to install graphics processing units (GPUs), the chips widely used for AI work 1.
  • Microsoft rents capacity from partners such as Nscale to run internal AI workloads. That can leave more room in Azure cloud data centers for outside customers 2.
  • Nscale is a UK-based AI infrastructure startup that emerged in 2024 after a spinout from crypto-mining infrastructure firm Arkon Energy. It grew into a partner and, as of March 2026, raised a US$2 billion series C round at a US$14.6 billion valuation 3.

Energy prices and rules are reshaping where AI data centers get built

  • The agreement tracks a broader shift in the AI data center market. Cheap, steady electricity and clear regulations now weigh heavily in location choices 4.
  • Countries that cannot offer workable energy and policy conditions could miss out on billions in investment. That can weaken plans to become major AI hubs 5.
  • This shift lifts the “neocloud” sector, which builds high-performance GPU infrastructure. Forecasts put the market for these services above US$250 billion by 2030 6.
