Microsoft ends local operations in Pakistan after 25 years
Microsoft has announced the closure of its operations in Pakistan, ending a 25-year presence in the country.
The company will now serve Pakistani customers through resellers and regional offices.
The decision affects five local employees, as Microsoft had no engineering resources in Pakistan and focused mainly on sales of Azure and Office products.
Customer agreements and services will remain unaffected.
Pakistan’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry linked the move to Microsoft’s global workforce optimization efforts. The company recently announced a 4% reduction in its global workforce, or around 9,000 jobs.
Former Microsoft executive Jawwad Rehman said the exit reflects challenges in Pakistan’s business environment. The local market is mostly served by domestic firms and Chinese companies such as Huawei.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Pakistan faces broader tech exodus amid deteriorating business climate
Microsoft’s departure is part of a concerning pattern affecting Pakistan’s entire tech ecosystem, not an isolated corporate decision.
The country has seen over 55 startups shut down or radically pivot between 2021 and 2024, reflecting systemic challenges for tech businesses1.
Startup funding in Pakistan has collapsed by 88%, plummeting from $355 million in 2022 to just $43 million in 2024, indicating a severe capital crunch1.
The unstable economic environment is pushing tech talent abroad, with over 10,000 tech professionals leaving Pakistan in 2023 alone1.
Microsoft’s exit after 25 years highlights how persistent infrastructure challenges, including frequent power outages and poor connectivity, create an environment where even established global companies struggle to operate efficiently2.
This exit reflects fundamental business environment issues rather than company-specific problems, raising serious questions about Pakistan’s ability to retain multinational tech investment.
2️⃣ Pakistan-India tech disparity widens with each multinational exit
