Microsoft urged a US court to block the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk.

It asked a judge to issue a temporary restraining order covering existing contracts and filed a motion in US District Court in San Francisco seeking permission to submit an amicus brief.

Microsoft said a restraining order would prevent disruption to the military’s use of advanced AI and allow time for negotiation.

Anthropic sued the Trump administration after the Department of Defense designated the company as a supply chain risk, banned its technology, and required defense contractors to certify they do not use Anthropic models.

The DOD said the ban was effective immediately after talks over military access and limits on autonomous use and surveillance collapsed.

Anthropic called the action unprecedented and unlawful, warning that hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts were at risk.

Amazon and Google said Anthropic products outside defense work would remain available on their cloud platforms.
