Micron plans second DRAM fab at acquired Taiwan site
Micron said it plans to build a second manufacturing facility at the Tongluo site in Taiwan that it acquired from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.
The company said it has completed the acquisition of the Tongluo P5 site.
Micron said the plant would help expand supply of leading-edge DRAM products, to support surging AI demand and that construction is scheduled to begin by the end of fiscal 2026.

Micron’s $1.8 billion deal marks a strategy turn
- Micron will pay $1.8 billion in cash for Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s (PSMC) Tongluo P5 site, with about 300,000 square feet of existing 300mm cleanroom space that it plans to retrofit 1.
- The purchase moves Micron away from its past “technology-for-capacity” approach, where it shared advanced DRAM process technology with partners, including PSMC, in exchange for wafer output or fab access 2.
- That approach has become hard to sustain since modern DRAM fabs can cost roughly $15 billion to $25 billion or more, which makes partner-funded builds less likely when the technology comes from another company 2.
- Micron said a second facility at the Tongluo site in Taiwan should start construction by the end of fiscal 2026, while meaningful product shipments from the existing fab should start in fiscal 2028 1.
Micron plans for a longer AI memory shortage
- Micron expects faster output by buying an existing plant instead of starting from zero, and it said cleanroom retrofitting begins now that the transaction is completed 1.
