Micron plans $10b for AI, memory research
Micron Technology, a US memory chip maker based in Boise, said on August 20 that it launched Micron Research Labs, a US research hub in Boise.
The company planned to invest US$10 billion over the next decade in long-term memory and AI research.
Micron said the lab would study memory technologies, advanced memory and compute architectures, chip packaging, and future semiconductor manufacturing.
The investment would also support university collaborations, global satellite labs, and partnerships with academia, government, startups, customers, and other industry players.
The company said it expected to break ground in 2027 on a facility that could host hundreds of researchers.
Micron added that the investment was separate from, and in addition to, its previously announced plan to invest more than US$250 billion in US manufacturing and research and development.
It was unclear whether the project could qualify for US incentives, as available guidance suggests the CHIPS and Science Act tax credit focuses on semiconductor production rather than standalone research and development facilities.
Other memory chip makers have also been investing in AI-related chip expansion, although reported spending by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix has been centered in South Korea.
