Micron launches new units to meet AI memory chip demand
Micron Technology has reorganized its business segments to meet rising demand for memory chips driven by AI applications.
The company launched a new “cloud memory business unit” focused on products for large-scale data centers and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, essential for AI tasks.
HBM chips, often used with AI graphics processors from companies like Nvidia, have attracted significant investor interest.
The new unit will be led by Raj Narasimhan, who previously managed Micron’s “compute and networking business unit.”
Additionally, Micron introduced three other new business units: the “core data center business unit,” the “mobile and client business unit,” and the “automotive and embedded business unit.”

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Micron’s pivot reflects the explosive growth of high-bandwidth memory market
Micron’s restructuring to create a dedicated cloud memory unit aligns with the dramatic expansion of the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) sector, which is projected to grow at an impressive 31.3% compound annual growth rate from 2023 to 2031 1.
This organizational shift comes as the global HBM market is experiencing unprecedented demand, with industry forecasts predicting a 67% expansion driven by AI applications 2.
The strategic importance of HBM chips is evident in the current tech landscape, as they’ve become essential components that maximize performance in AI-focused GPUs, particularly those from Nvidia 3.
Micron’s restructuring mirrors similar strategic moves across the memory industry, where manufacturers are racing to capture market share in this high-growth segment that’s reshaping the broader semiconductor landscape.
2️⃣ Memory market hierarchy faces potential disruption amid intense HBM competition
Micron’s reorganization represents a strategic challenge to the current HBM market hierarchy where SK Hynix has established dominance, with reports showing HBM sales accounting for 40% of SK Hynix’s total DRAM revenue 4.
The intensity of this competition is evident in the financial performance gap, with SK Hynix recently reporting an operating profit of 8.1 trillion won compared to Samsung’s estimated 6.5 trillion won, largely due to SK Hynix’s strength in HBM 4.
This competitive landscape is particularly significant as Micron has historically demonstrated resilience in volatile memory markets, having survived previous industry shakeouts that eliminated many competitors 5.
