🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Social platform growth follows established patterns of rapid adoption and volatility
Threads’ 127.8% year-over-year growth mirrors historical patterns seen with other social platforms that experienced meteoric rises.
This rapid growth resembles TikTok’s trajectory from 2016-2018, when it gained approximately 20 million new users monthly to reach 500 million users within just two years of launch 1.
Social media platforms historically demonstrate extreme volatility in user adoption, as evidenced by MySpace and Friendster, which dominated early social media before losing virtually all market share to Facebook by 2012 2.
The data suggests that reaching critical mass quickly is crucial. Facebook grew from representing just 1.5% of the global population in 2008 to 30% by 2019, demonstrating how successful platforms can achieve exponential adoption 2.
While Threads’ growth is impressive, history shows that maintaining this momentum is the real challenge, as even once-dominant platforms can rapidly lose relevance when user preferences shift.
2️⃣ Multi-platform engagement strategy remains critical for social media dominance
