Meta’s Reality Labs reports $4.4b operating loss in Q3

Meta reported that its Reality Labs division posted a US$4.4 billion operating loss and US$470 million in sales for Q3 2025.

Analysts had predicted a wider loss of US$5.1 billion and lower revenue of US$316 million.

Reality Labs develops Meta’s Quest VR headsets and Ray-Ban and Oakley AI smart glasses with EssilorLuxottica.

Since late 2020, Reality Labs has accumulated over US$70 billion in operating losses, reflecting the high costs of building VR, AR, and hardware.

Meta CFO Susan Li said Q4 revenue for Reality Labs is expected to fall below last year’s figure, citing no new VR headset launches for 2025.

Li also said that while AI glasses sales are growing, this is offset by weaker demand for Quest devices.

Meta’s US$799 Ray-Ban Display AI glasses, revealed in September, include a display and wristband with neural input tech.

Vishal Shah, previously leading metaverse work, is now vice president of AI products at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Meta leans into ambient AI wearables with Ray-Ban Display

  • CFO Susan Li said rising AI glasses sales will not offset weaker Quest demand, while Meta moved Vishal Shah from metaverse work to AI products, signaling a shift to ambient AI wearables.
  • Worldwide shipments of AR and VR headsets plus display-less smart glasses, smart glasses without a built-in screen, will rise 39.2% in 2025 to 14.3 million units, led by a 247.5% surge in display-less smart glasses 1.
  • Ray-Ban Display costs US$799 with an electromyography (EMG) wristband for neural input 2. The frames favor quick tasks like productivity and notifications over immersion. Apple and Meta still lack a mass-market win as Google re-enters with Android extended reality (XR) 3.

Developers can build for Meta’s smart glasses software development kit (SDK)

  • Meta’s Wearables Device Access Toolkit will let smartphone apps use the glasses camera, speakers, and microphone with permission in 2025 4. Early apps include Microsoft’s Seeing AI, an assistive app for people who are blind or have low vision, plus 18Birdies 4. They open B2B paths in accessibility, training, and field service 4.
  • Creators get first-person recording through Twitch (a live streaming service) and Logitech Streamlabs (creator broadcasting tools) 4. Ship before Ray-Ban Display expands to Canada, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom (UK) in early 2026 to gain ground beyond games 2. The SDK will not include Meta AI at launch, leaving room for specialized third-party AI tools 4.
