Instagram reduces quality of videos with low views: lead

Instagram adjusts video quality based on the number of views, according to the platform’s head, Adam Mosseri.

In a recent Q&A session, Mosseri said Instagram begins with high-quality video.

However, if a clip doesn’t gain many views, its quality is reduced. Should views increase, Instagram will re-render the video at a higher quality.

This approach aligns with Meta’s 2021 strategy to handle the vast amount of video uploads.

Meta allocates resources to videos with more views, starting with basic encoding and advancing to sophisticated processing as popularity rises.

Some concerns exist that this might negatively impact smaller creators. Mosseri, however, believes that user engagement is more influenced by content than video quality.
