Meta’s content moderation contractor said to cut 2,000 jobs

Telus, a Canadian tech company, has laid off around 2,000 employees at its content moderation center in Barcelona after Meta Platforms ended its contract, according to local unions CCOO and UGT.

Operating as CCC Barcelona Digital Services, Telus notified workers via email that operations would stop following the client’s decision on Apr. 1.

Although the client wasn’t named, unions confirmed it was Meta. Employees are now on gardening leave with full pay while Telus negotiates severance terms.

A Meta spokesperson said the services previously handled in Barcelona have been shifted to other locations but the company is not reducing its content review efforts.

The Barcelona team moderated content in several languages, including Catalan, Dutch, French, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Spanish.

The Barcelona office in the Glories tower closed at noon on Apr. 3, and employees were told to leave.
