Meta ups exec pay with stock options as AI race heats up
Meta Platforms has granted restricted stock units and stock options to several senior executives, including Susan Li, CFO, and Andrew Bosworth, CTO, with payouts tied to performance and share price targets.
The awards come as Meta looks to retain top talent.
A Meta spokesperson described the packages as a “big bet” and said they “will not be realized unless Meta achieves massive future success, benefiting all of our shareholders.”

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Executive rewards contrast sharply with staff compensation cuts
- Top executives are getting new stock awards. Their target annual cash bonuses also rise from 75% to 200% of base salary, excluding CEO Mark Zuckerberg, starting with the 2025 annual performance period 1.
- Many employees face a smaller yearly stock option grant, down about 10% 2.
- Equity makes up most senior executive pay. For CTO Andrew Bosworth, stock accounted for 91% of his $20.3 million compensation package last year 3.
- These pay changes land while Meta trims headcount. Recent cuts focused on the company’s lowest-performing employees 2.
The high cost of the AI arms race is reshaping big tech payrolls
- Meta’s executive push tracks its AI spending plans. Mark Zuckerberg said Meta expects to spend $60 billion or more on AI infrastructure in 2025 1.
- The awards aim to keep leaders needed for the shift, including CFO Susan Li and CTO Andrew Bosworth 4.
- This approach may spread across large tech firms. It concentrates huge, long-term equity incentives on a small group of senior leaders for capital-intensive technology shifts 4.
- The result is a two-tier pay structure. AI investment and executive retention are partly supported by wider cost controls, including smaller equity awards for many employees 2.
