Meta unveiled Charm at its September 23 Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California.

The handheld device is designed for the company’s Muse AI assistant.

It has a roughly 2-inch touchscreen and built-in 5G, as tech firms race to develop hardware beyond smartphones.

Meta said Charm will ship for the holiday season in December but did not disclose a price.

It also said Muse will expand across the company’s smart glasses, letting users shop, make appointments, and complete other tasks by voice.

Meta also introduced virtual reality glasses priced at US$1,299, with a launch planned for spring 2027.

It also launched camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses, which will start at US$349 on October 13.

The announcement comes as Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica, an eyewear company based in France and Italy, said sales of Meta AI glasses have tripled.

OpenAI’s partnership with Jony Ive also points to rising competition in post-smartphone AI devices.

Analysts said the audio-only design may not resolve privacy concerns because users can still record audio without a clear signal to bystanders that recording is under way.
