Meta trims metaverse bet, end Horizon Worlds on Quest 1

Meta Platforms Inc. said on March 17, users of its Meta Quest headsets will lose access to Meta Horizon Worlds starting June 15, including the ability to build or update virtual worlds.

Horizon Worlds is a virtual destination where cartoon versions of people can meet up and play games. Meta points out that access to Meta Horizon Worlds will continue on the Meta Horizon mobile app.

The change is the latest pullback from a strategy once central to Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of a so-called metaverse.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Meta separates Quest VR from Horizon Worlds

  • Meta is splitting the Quest VR platform from the Horizon Worlds (“Worlds”) platform 1.
  • Meta pegs 86% of the effective time people spend in Meta Quest VR headsets as time spent in third-party apps, across first-party and third-party apps, rather than Meta’s own content 1.
  • Meta is shifting VR funding toward outside creators, with nearly $150 million set for VR developer programs in 2025 1.
  • Meta is pushing Horizon Worlds toward an “almost exclusively mobile” focus to take on Roblox (a popular platform where people create and play user-made games) and Fortnite (Epic Games’ blockbuster online game with a large creator ecosystem) 1.

The metaverse breaks into two competitive tracks

  • The plan draws a clear line between Quest VR as a home for third-party apps and a mobile-first Horizon Worlds run through the Meta Horizon mobile app 1.
  • Pulling back from Meta-made blockbuster VR games could give more room for third-party titles to stand out on the Quest store 1.
  • Some studios may hold back, since UploadVR argues Meta’s VR direction has kept changing since it acquired Oculus (the VR hardware and software company behind early consumer headsets) nearly twelve years ago 1.
  • Moving Worlds onto phones puts Meta in tougher creator-platform fights, while Ryan’s blog post says Meta plans to use its social networks to connect games with billions of people 1.
