Meta to stop political ads in EU starting October
Meta announced it will stop accepting political, election, or social issue ads in the European Union starting in October.
This follows the upcoming Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation, which Meta says poses operational challenges and legal uncertainties.
The new rules require political ads to include information on targeting criteria, funding sources, costs, and supported causes or elections.
Meta clarified the ban only applies to paid ads. Users, including candidates, can still post and discuss political topics.
Google had previously made a similar move, citing challenges in labeling political ads and the reliability of local election data.
Both companies have criticized the TTPA’s broad scope, saying it’s difficult to implement accurately.
