Meta to lay off 5% of workforce
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, will begin layoffs on Feb. 10, affecting around 5% of its workforce.
Notifications will start at 5 am local time in various regions, including the US, while other areas in Europe, Asia, and Africa will follow between Feb. 11 and Feb. 18.
Employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will not be included in the layoffs due to local labor laws.
Unlike previous layoffs, Meta will keep its offices open during this process.
The company refers to these cuts as “performance terminations,” targeting what it categorizes as “lowest performers.” Some positions may be filled again in the future.
Peng Fan, VP of engineering for monetization, urged teams to speed up hiring for key roles like machine learning engineers. This recruitment will take place from Feb. 11 and March 13 to support Meta’s 2025 strategic goals.
