Meta to integrate Midjourney AI in image and video tools
Meta will license AI image and video generation technology from generative AI lab Midjourney, according to Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang.
Meta’s research teams will work with Midjourney to integrate its technology into future AI models and products.
Meta, which operates Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, has already added its own AI image tool Imagine to several products and offers a video generation tool called Movie Gen.
The Midjourney agreement follows other AI partnerships and investments by Meta, including funding in Scale AI and an investment in Play AI.
Terms of the Midjourney deal were not disclosed, but CEO David Holz said the startup remains independent and has never taken outside funding.
Meta and other major AI labs face legal challenges over alleged use of copyrighted data to train their models, with ongoing lawsuits in the US and Europe.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Tech giants increasingly favor licensing over acquisition for AI capabilities
Meta’s licensing deal with Midjourney reflects a strategic shift toward partnerships rather than full acquisitions in the AI space.
This approach allows Meta to access cutting-edge technology while avoiding the complexities of integrating independent companies that have built unique cultures and capabilities 1.
Midjourney’s position is particularly unique—the company has never taken outside funding and remains fully independent, making traditional acquisition approaches potentially more difficult 1.
Meta has demonstrated this partnership-first strategy before, notably with PyTorch 1.0 in 2018, when it collaborated with major cloud providers like AWS, Google, and Microsoft rather than building competing platforms 2.
The licensing approach also allows both companies to maintain their separate focuses, Meta on social media integration and Midjourney on specialized AI image generation, while still benefiting from shared technology development.
2️⃣ Copyright concerns are reshaping how AI companies access training data and technology
The partnership comes amid mounting legal pressure over AI companies’ use of copyrighted material, with Midjourney facing lawsuits alleging unauthorized use of copyrighted works for training 1.
