In the first half of 2023, social media giants Meta and TikTok implemented a record number of content and account restrictions in Malaysia, following increased requests from the government.

About 3,100 pages and posts were restricted by Meta due to alleged local law violations, while TikTok received 340 content removal requests. Malaysia surpassed other Southeast Asian governments in requests to restrict TikTok content.
