Meta tests facial recognition to fight scams

Meta is testing facial recognition technology to combat scams and restore access to compromised accounts.

The company aims to enhance detection of ads using public figures’ images in scams and aid users in verifying identities for account recovery.

The technology compares ad images with public figures’ profile pictures on Facebook and Instagram.

If a match indicates a scam, the ad will be blocked, and any facial data used will be deleted.

Meta also plans to identify fake accounts impersonating public figures.

This new technology, along with existing systems, could speed up the process of detecting impostor accounts.

To assist with account recovery, Meta is testing video selfies for identity verification. This involves comparing video images with profile pictures, with facial data deleted after verification.
