Meta taps new Southeast Asia operations head

Meta Technologies has appointed Sandhya Devanathan as the head of its Southeast Asia operations.

She previously served as the company’s vice president for India, according to a statement from Dan Neary, Meta’s Asia Pacific head.

Devanathan joined Meta in 2016 and has held several senior positions, including country head for Singapore and business head for Vietnam.

In November 2022, she was named vice president and managing director for India.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic leadership changes reflect Meta’s focus on high-growth Asian markets

Devanathan’s expanded role signals Meta’s intensified focus on Southeast Asia, a region that features prominently in the company’s growth strategy alongside India.

This leadership restructuring comes as the global Metaverse market is projected to grow from $146.6 billion in 2024 to $1.1 trillion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 39.3% 1.

The Asia-Pacific region specifically is showing remarkable growth potential, with countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines becoming increasingly important digital markets 2.

By consolidating leadership for India and Southeast Asia under Devanathan, Meta positions itself to create more cohesive strategies across interconnected markets that share similar growth trajectories and consumer behaviors.

2️⃣ Meta values cross-regional experience in its leadership pipeline

Devanathan’s appointment highlights Meta’s preference for leaders with diverse regional experience, as she joined Meta in 2016 and has held positions spanning Southeast Asian markets, gaming, and country-specific leadership roles 2.

Similarly, Benjamin Joe’s promotion to Regional VP for Asia Pacific follows his 14-year career trajectory at Meta that included leadership positions in the United States, Korea, and Southeast Asia, demonstrating the company’s internal leadership development approach 3.

This pattern of promoting leaders with cross-regional experience appears strategic, particularly as research indicates that understanding cultural nuances significantly impacts leadership effectiveness across different markets 4.

The appointment of leaders who understand local market dynamics becomes especially critical as Meta navigates complex regulatory environments while pursuing growth in regions that collectively represent its largest user bases.
