Meta taps ChatGPT co-creator as AI super lab chief scientist

Meta Platforms has appointed Shengjia Zhao as chief scientist of its new Superintelligence Lab, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a Threads post on July 25.

Zhao, a former OpenAI research scientist involved in developing ChatGPT and GPT-4, co-founded the lab.

He will work closely with Zuckerberg and chief AI officer Alexandr Wang to set its research agenda.

The lab operates independently from Meta’s main AI division, FAIR.

Meta has faced challenges with the performance of its Llama 4 model and is responding by offering competitive compensation and forming partnerships with startups.

The company also plans to open-source its AI work, a decision that has drawn both praise and criticism.
