Meta stock rises 3% after report of potential layoffs

Meta’s stock rose about 3% after Reuters reported that top executives had told senior leaders to start making plans to reduce headcount by more than 20% to offset rising AI spending, according to anonymous sources.

Reuters said top executives told senior leaders to prepare cuts that could affect over 15,000 workers, and a Meta spokesperson told CNBC the report was “speculative” about theoretical approaches.

Meta employed about 79,000 people as of December 2025, and such a reduction would be its largest since late 2022 when it cut 11,000 roles.

In its Q4 earnings report in January, the company projected AI-related capital expenditure of about US$115 billion to US$135 billion for 2026 as it expands AI infrastructure.

Analysts noted big AI investments across hyperscalers total roughly US$700 billion, and consulting firm Challenger Gray & Christmas said AI has been cited in over 12,000 US job cuts so far in 2026.

Jefferies analysts said cuts tied to AI could shift how investors view headcount relative to growth and margins.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Meta’s AI spending may be larger than its official capex budget suggests

  • Meta’s capital expenditure (capex) totals miss part of its infrastructure spend. Some data center construction runs through financing deals, which keep certain costs out of capex 1.
  • Meta set up a US$27 billion joint venture to build a new data center. Blue Owl Capital (an alternative asset manager) will pay 80% of the cost. CFO Susan Li said most construction spending will stay out of capex while the site is built 1.
  • CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to frontload compute capacity. He said a “superintelligence” breakthrough could come in a few years, five years, seven years, or longer 1.
  • Susan Li said Meta still faces capacity limits. Internal demand for computing has grown faster than supply 2.

The new tech playbook, swapping human capital for AI capital

  • Wall Street responded well. Investors read Meta’s approach as a leaner operating model for big tech 3.
  • Some shareholders view potential layoffs as a way to fund AI spending. They also see AI-driven productivity that could support a smaller staff 3.
  • Reuters reported that the cuts aim to cover AI infrastructure costs. The plan also assumes higher output from AI-assisted workers, citing sources familiar with the matter 4.
  • Amazon has made similar corporate job cuts. The company tied part of the move to efficiency gains from artificial intelligence plus broader cultural changes 4.
