Meta starts ByteDance ad ban in seven markets

Meta began implementing a ban on ads and paid marketing messages from ByteDance on October 8.

ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok, still oversees parts of TikTok’s US operations.

The restriction applies in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

It also covers third-party advertisers whose campaigns link to TikTok or other ByteDance properties in those markets.

Meta said refusing promotional services to a competitor is a normal business practice.

The move follows Meta’s August 2026 US$18 billion settlement with 48 US states over child safety claims.

The settlement requires new safety features for minors on Instagram and Facebook. Meta said the commitments would support teens.

Since the settlement, Meta has pressed TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar child safety changes.
