Meta signs $140m deal with AI image startup Black Forest Labs

Meta Platforms Inc. has signed a multi-year contract worth more than US$100 million to use technology from Black Forest Labs, a German AI image startup.

Meta will commit US$35 million to Black Forest Labs in the first year and US$105 million in the second year, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Black Forest Labs, founded a year ago by several computer scientists involved in Stable Diffusion, develops AI tools for image and video generation.

Last year, xAI’s Grok chatbot leaned on Black Forest Labs to roll out an image generation feature.

Black Forest Labs has also signed partnerships with Adobe, Canva, and Snap, bringing total contract value to around US$300 million, the source said.

The startup was generating US$96.3 million in annual recurring revenue as of August and projects ARR will climb to US$300 million in fiscal 2026, according to the person.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Big tech’s “buy vs build” dilemma reveals internal AI development challenges

  • Meta’s $140 million commitment to Black Forest Labs highlights how even AI-heavy companies are turning to external partners despite massive internal investments1.
  • The two-year deal structure—$35 million in year one and $105 million in year two—signals Meta’s acknowledgment that its internal image generation capabilities haven’t matched specialized competitors2.
  • This external licensing approach extends beyond Black Forest Labs, as Meta also struck a separate partnership with Midjourney for AI image technology in August, showing a pattern rather than a one-off decision3.
  • The trend reflects a broader industry challenge where large tech companies find that specialized AI startups can often outpace internal development teams in specific domains, despite having larger resources and talent pools.

Specialized AI startups achieve rapid monetization with big tech partnerships

  • Black Forest Labs demonstrates revenue acceleration, reaching $96.3 million in annual recurring revenue just one year after its founding and projecting growth to $300 million by fiscal 20261.
  • The startup has secured approximately $300 million in total contract value across partnerships with Meta, Adobe, Canva, and Snap14.
  • This rapid monetization enabled Black Forest Labs to achieve a $1 billion valuation with over $100 million in venture funding from investors like Andreessen Horowitz1.
  • The company’s success stems from its founders’ involvement in creating Stable Diffusion, showing how specialized AI expertise can translate into substantial enterprise contracts when big tech companies need immediate capabilities1.
