Meta secures 6 GW of nuclear power for US AI data centers

Meta has reached several agreements that could total more than 6-gigawatts of nuclear power for its expanding AI data centers in the US.

The deals include buying electricity from three existing Vistra Corp. plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and supporting new reactors planned by Oklo and TerraPower, which are backed by prominent tech investors.

Meta’s Prometheus data center in Ohio and the planned Hyperion site in Louisiana are among its largest AI projects.

Oklo’s new reactors could start operating by 2030, pending regulatory approval.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Meta’s 6 GW plan leans on unproven SMRs, with first power unlikely before 2030

  • TerraPower’s unlicensed small modular reactor (SMR) targets 2031 for operation, with a construction permit in early 2026 and fuel loading by 2030 1. Oklo won NRC acceptance of its design criteria in 15 days under an accelerated path, with a draft evaluation due early 2026 2.
  • Analysts expect Oklo approvals to run for years with revenue beyond 2027 3. The NRC seeks 18-month licensing decisions for new advanced reactors 4, yet first-of-a-kind projects seldom hit that mark.
  • Meta plans natural gas for the Hyperion data center in Louisiana to cover nuclear delays. Entergy, the area’s regulated utility, applied to boost gas for the site while the company pursues these nuclear deals.

Federal push for 24/7 clean energy procurement and co-location rules

  • A Request for Information (RFI) seeks 2.7 million MWh per year of carbon-free power in PJM (the grid operator for parts of the mid-Atlantic and Midwest), toward the 2030 goal of 100% carbon-free electricity (CFE) with at least half local plus 24/7 hourly matching 5.
  • The General Services Administration’s (GSA) hourly matching goal lifts demand for 24/7 tracking software that verifies when and where supply meets load 5.
  • Grid-enhancing technology providers, companies that boost transmission capacity with software and hardware, benefit from a FERC order in December 2025 6. PJM must offer faster interconnection and service below nameplate capacity for co-located loads (new demand sited alongside generation), letting projects connect at less than full output 6.
