🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The high cost of building personal superintelligence
- Meta lifted its capital spending forecast to US$125 billion to US$145 billion, after raising 2025 spending by more than 80% to US$72 billion 1.
- The money supports a long-range push for “personal superintelligence,” which CEO Mark Zuckerberg sees affecting daily life more than the AI content surge 1.
- Even with that outlay, management expects 2026 operating income to top the US$83.276 billion Meta earned in 2025, leaning on advertising to pay for the plan 2.
- Pressure is already building, with free cash flow falling in 2025 while long-term debt more than doubled to US$58.744 billion as of Dec. 31, 2025 2.
Meta’s AI plans face regulators
- Strong results also sit beside a dispute with European Union regulators that could hurt Meta’s growth plans 3.
- The European Commission, the European Union’s executive arm, preliminarily found Meta may have broken the Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA is an EU law on online platform safety, and the issue centers on failing to stop children under 13 from using its platforms 3.
- A penalty could reach 6% of global annual turnover, or about US$12 billion based on 2025 revenue of US$201 billion 3.
- That risk is real. Regulators fined Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, Meta’s main EU operating unit, 1.2 billion euros (US$1.3 billion) in 2023 over unlawful data transfers tied to Facebook 4.
- As Meta spends more on AI to keep people using its apps, it also faces more scrutiny from rules meant to limit platform use among younger users.
