Meta and Reliance Industries, the Mumbai-based conglomerate behind Jio, said they agreed to develop an AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Reliance will build the facility’s first 168-megawatt (MW) phase, which Meta will lease, with an option to expand.

The companies said the site will run on renewable energy and use desalinated seawater for cooling, with Meta paying the cost of the energy and water used.

Meta also said it has contracted nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of new clean energy in India, including 837 MW with CleanMax and 88 MW with Fourth Partner Energy.

The Jamnagar deal extends a partnership that included Meta’s US$5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020.

The first phase is far larger than India’s 60 MW mega-campus benchmark.

It also reflects a market where hyperscale colocation is rising; JLL said first-half 2025 net take-up rose 48% year on year.

Gujarat is seen as a good location for power-intensive data center campuses because of access to renewable power and available land.

The project’s water model comes as the sector faces scrutiny over water use. Indian data centers consume about 150 billion litres of water a year, and Gujarat is planning eight plants for desalination.
