Meta raises Quest headset prices on higher chip costs
Meta will raise the US prices for its Quest 3S and Quest 3 VR headsets from April 19, citing higher memory chip costs.
The Quest 3S will cost US$349.99 to US$449.99, while the Quest 3 will cost US$599.99.
Meta said the higher prices will also apply to refurbished Quest units, while accessory prices will stay the same, and it is the latest to raise hardware prices during the RAM shortage, joining peers such as Samsung, Microsoft, and Sony.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The AI data center boom is helping drive a memory chip crunch
- Meta raised prices as memory chip costs climb, driven by strong AI data center demand for memory chips 1.
- Large memory suppliers are shifting output from standard DRAM and NAND used in consumer electronics to higher-margin options for AI data centers. Those options include High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and high-capacity DDR5, a newer type of memory used in servers and PCs, which tightens supply for consumer devices 2.
- DRAM contract prices are forecast to jump 90%-95% quarter-on-quarter in Q1 2026, based on a TrendForce, a market research firm that tracks the semiconductor industry, estimate cited by DigiTimes 3.
- Pricing has turned erratic, with DigiTimes reporting that smaller device makers and electronics suppliers now see memory quotes move hour by hour as a small group of top-tier buyers gets priority supply 3.
Meta’s price hike underscores broader consumer electronics price pressure
- The squeeze reaches beyond VR into smartphones and PCs, which can ripple through consumer electronics pricing 2.
- PC vendors such as Lenovo, Dell, HP, Acer and ASUS have warned business customers about tighter supply. IDC, the technology market research firm formerly known as International Data Corporation, reports 15%-20% hikes plus contract resets across the industry 2.
- DigiTimes describes a split market in which roughly 100 top-tier buyers can lock in supply, while more than 190,000 small and mid-size businesses compete for the rest 3.
- IDC expects the shortage could last into 2027, which points to a medium-term end to cheap, plentiful memory and storage 2.
