Meta plans to start making AI chip Iris in September

Meta plans to start manufacturing its in-house AI chip, code-named Iris, in September, according to an internal memo.

The chip will be used in the company’s data centers as Meta expands computing capacity for the AI systems behind Facebook and Instagram.

The chip is part of Meta’s Meta Training and Inference Accelerators program.

Broadcom helped design it, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, also known as TSMC, will make it.

Meta aims to cut costs and use Iris alongside graphics processing units from Nvidia and AMD.

Meta said MTIA was an inference-first chip family for ranking, recommendations, and generative AI.

It already deployed hundreds of thousands of MTIA chips for inference workloads.

The memo said Meta planned to deploy 7 gigawatts of computing infrastructure in 2026 and 14 gigawatts in 2027.

Meta expected to spend as much as $145 billion on AI infrastructure this year.

Meta also had multiyear supply deals with Samsung Electronics for memory chips, Sandisk for flash storage, and Sumitomo Electric for fibre-optic equipment.
