Meta plans new in-house AI chip deployment in 2027
Meta plans to begin deploying a new in-house AI chip in its data centers in the first half of 2027 to cut power use and lower AI infrastructure costs.
The company is testing its current chip, the MTIA 450, called Arke. Meta expects its next chip, the MTIA 500, called Astrid, to finish design work in about a month and enter data centers at the end of 2027.
Meta is developing the chips with Broadcom and manufacturing them with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. as it tries to reduce its reliance on Nvidia for some AI inference workloads.
The company canceled an earlier chip project meant for both training and inference because of cost concerns.
The effort comes as Meta still depends heavily on Nvidia for AI computing. Mark Zuckerberg said in 2024 that the company was spending billions on Nvidia AI chips. In 2026, Meta agreed to buy millions more.
