Meta offers big pay to attract AI talent, denies $100m bonuses

Meta is reportedly offering large pay packages to attract AI researchers, though claims of US$100 million signing bonuses have been disputed.

During a company-wide meeting, CTO Andrew Bosworth addressed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s comments.

He said compensation for senior roles could total $100 million over several years, including RSUs tied to performance or tenure. He added, “The market’s hot. It’s not that hot.”

Researcher Lucas Beyer, who recently moved from OpenAI to Meta, called the US$100 million signing bonus claims “fake news.”

Meta has hired several top AI experts, including Trapit Bansal, also formerly of OpenAI. Some offers have reportedly reached US$18 million, though not all are being accepted.

The hires highlight Meta’s push into entertainment AI, supporting products like Quest VR headsets and AI-enabled glasses.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ AI talent compensation reflects extreme scarcity, not just hype

The compensation packages for AI researchers reveal a fundamental supply-demand imbalance rather than just tech industry excess.

Meta is targeting just 50-100 elite AI researchers globally with multi-million dollar packages, demonstrating how concentrated this talent pool truly is 1.

The structure of these packages, primarily long-term equity grants rather than cash bonuses, shows companies are designing compensation to ensure retention in a field with high poaching risk 2.

This scarcity is quantifiable: Meta’s attrition rate for AI talent stands at 4.3%, one of the highest among major tech companies, and its retention rate of 64% lags behind competitors like Anthropic and Google DeepMind 3.

The significant compensation stratification—with entry-level researchers earning $300,000-$500,000 annually while seniors command $700,000 to over $1 million—reflects how companies value experience in this nascent field 4.

These compensation structures are reminiscent of historical moments during other technology inflection points, such as the mobile talent acquisitions in the 2010s, where specialized expertise commanded premium valuations during periods of rapid innovation.

2️⃣ CEO involvement signals strategic repositioning beyond traditional tech
