Meta, Oakley to launch AR glasses for outdoor users

Meta has announced the upcoming launch of Oakley-branded augmented reality (AR) glasses, set for June 20, 2025.

The news was revealed in a teaser video by Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew “Boz” Bosworth.

The collaboration between Oakley and Meta was first reported in January.

The glasses are anticipated to provide an alternative to the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses for users engaged in outdoor activities.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Meta’s strategic pivot to established eyewear brands is transforming AR adoption

Meta’s new partnership with Oakley follows their successful collaboration with Ray-Ban, marking a fundamental shift in how AR technology reaches consumers.

This brand partnership approach has proven effective, with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses capturing over 60% market share in 2024 and driving a 210% year-over-year surge in global smart glasses shipments1.

This strategy contrasts earlier AR ventures that struggled with market acceptance, including the original Meta AR company (unrelated to Facebook/Meta) that ultimately sold its assets after failing to achieve commercial success despite significant technological innovation2.

The shift toward collaborating with established eyewear brands addresses a critical barrier to adoption: consumer reluctance to wear unfamiliar, tech-heavy devices on their faces.

By integrating technology into familiar, stylish frames from trusted brands, Meta has found a formula that addresses aesthetic concerns while leveraging established distribution networks and brand loyalty.

2️⃣ Sports and outdoor recreation emerge as strategic frontiers for AR adoption

Meta’s targeting of cyclists and outdoor athletes with Oakley AR glasses represents a calculated move into a domain where augmented reality offers compelling functional benefits.

For outdoor athletes specifically, AR can provide valuable real-time metrics like pace and heart rate, enhance navigation by identifying landmarks and trail directions, and even analyze environmental risks like avalanche potential3.

This expansion into sports-specific applications allows Meta to address different user needs than their lifestyle-focused Ray-Ban line, tapping into the performance-enhancement motivations of athletes rather than just social connectivity.
