Meta, Microsoft leases push cloud tally past $850b

Meta and Microsoft added more than US$120 billion in future lease commitments in their latest quarters, pushing the total among the largest cloud computing companies above US$850 billion as they expand AI infrastructure, according to regulatory filings.

Meta added US$79 billion in new commitments, up 76% from the prior period, bringing its total to US$182.9 billion as of March 31.

Microsoft added more than US$41 billion, bringing its total to US$196.6 billion.

Much of the US$850 billion will be paid over the next two decades.

Meta has said 2026 capital expenditures could reach US$135 billion, while industry estimates put Microsoft’s 2026 capital expenditure at about US$145 billion.

Analysts say leasing can reduce upfront capital spending, but it also leaves companies with large off-balance-sheet obligations that can limit financial flexibility.
