Meta launches WhatsApp for iPad users

Meta’s WhatsApp has launched an app specifically designed for Apple’s iPad, enhancing user experience on the tablet.

The new version features a two-column layout and supports iPadOS multitasking capabilities, including Split View.

The app retains essential functions from earlier versions, such as video calls accommodating up to 32 participants.

This launch makes WhatsApp the latest Meta platform to become optimized for iPad, following Facebook and Messenger.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ WhatsApp’s delayed iPad optimization reveals Meta’s platform prioritization strategy

The years-long wait for an iPad-specific WhatsApp app demonstrates Meta’s selective approach to platform development despite the app’s massive reach.

WhatsApp has over 3 billion monthly active users worldwide, making it Meta’s most widely used messaging platform 1.

This delayed optimization is notable because WhatsApp is particularly dominant in emerging markets like India (535.8 million users) and throughout Latin America, where it serves as the primary communication method due to high SMS costs 2.

The gap in iPad support has persisted despite WhatsApp’s critical role in Meta’s ecosystem since its $19 billion acquisition in 2014, one of the largest tech acquisitions in history 3.

This pattern of selective platform optimization is consistent across Meta’s apps, as Instagram still lacks an iPad-optimized version despite being one of Meta’s core revenue generators.

2️⃣ Cross-platform consistency becoming crucial in the messaging app battleground

WhatsApp’s iPad release comes as messaging platforms increasingly compete on providing seamless experiences across all user devices and contexts.

While WhatsApp dominates globally in 70 out of 100 countries, its competitive landscape varies significantly by region, with apps like Telegram gaining traction in Eastern Europe and WeChat dominating in China 4.

In the U.S. market specifically, Apple’s iMessage remains a formidable competitor that has long offered iPad optimization, potentially influencing WhatsApp’s decision to finally address this platform gap 5.
