Meta launches standalone AI app to compete with ChatGPT
Meta Platforms has launched a standalone AI app powered by its Llama AI model, openly competing with ChatGPT creator OpenAI.
The app, announced on April 29, 2025, features a Discover feed for observing interactions and creating images.
This announcement follows reports from February and comes after Meta’s launch of an AI chatbot in September 2023, which was integrated into its existing apps.
In April 2024, Meta replaced the search feature in Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger with its AI chatbot.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The strategic evolution from embedded to standalone AI
Meta’s standalone AI app launch follows a deliberate adoption strategy unlike most competitors in the market.
The company first embedded Meta AI into its existing apps, replacing the search feature in Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, which quickly helped it amass approximately 700 million monthly active users as of January 1.
This “integration-first” approach contrasts with OpenAI and Google, which launched standalone AI assistants from the beginning, highlighting Meta’s ability to leverage its massive social media user base to drive AI adoption.
The timing of this standalone app release suggests Meta has achieved sufficient user familiarity with its AI capabilities through embedded experiences before asking users to download a dedicated application.
This demonstrates how Meta’s ownership of multiple high-engagement platforms creates unique AI distribution advantages that pure AI companies like OpenAI cannot match without partnerships.
2️⃣ The emergence of “social AI” as a key differentiator
Meta’s new app introduces a significant innovation with its “Discover feed” that shows how friends and others are using AI, creating a social dimension to AI interaction that’s absent from competitors.
This social approach to AI directly leverages Meta’s core strength in connecting people while addressing a key adoption barrier – many users simply don’t know what to ask AI assistants or how to effectively use them 2.
By making AI interactions visible and shareable, Meta is creating a network effect around AI usage, where seeing others’ prompts and results can inspire new use cases and drive increased engagement.
