Meta launches Llama AI adoption program to support US startups

Meta has launched “Llama for Startups,” a program designed to assist US-based startups in adopting its Llama AI models. The initiative includes support from Meta’s Llama team and potential funding opportunities.

To be eligible, startups must be incorporated in the US, have raised less than US$10 million in funding, employ at least one developer, and focus on generative AI applications.

Applications for the program will remain open until May 30. Participating startups can receive up to US$6,000 per month for six months to help cover costs.

This launch occurs as Meta seeks to enhance its position in the competitive open AI model market. Competitors include DeepSeek, Google, and Alibaba’s Qwen.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Big tech companies are racing to create AI startup ecosystems

Meta’s new Llama for Startups program mirrors similar initiatives from competitors like Google, revealing an industry-wide strategy to build developer ecosystems around proprietary AI models.

Google recently launched its AI Futures Fund with a similar approach, providing startups with early access to AI models, technical expertise, and cloud credits to companies building on their technology 1.

This pattern of startup support programs represents a strategic shift where AI model providers are competing not just on technical capabilities but on cultivating developer communities that can drive adoption and showcase diverse applications.

By offering funding US$6,000 monthly for up to six months) alongside technical expertise, Meta is addressing the significant compute costs that often create barriers for startups working with large language models.

These ecosystem-building efforts allow tech giants to externalize innovation while maintaining control of the underlying infrastructure, creating mutually beneficial relationships where startups get resources and big tech companies extend their AI reach.

2️⃣ Meta’s startup program emerges amid model development challenges

The timing of Meta’s startup program launch coincides with significant challenges in its AI model development roadmap, particularly the delayed release of its flagship “Behemoth” model.

Meta has postponed the Llama 4 Behemoth model due to insufficient advancements and internal frustrations over development progress, despite allocating up to US$72 billion for AI development 2.

This strategic pivot toward supporting external developers comes as the company faces diminishing returns from simply scaling up model size, a challenge affecting the broader AI industry as companies encounter limitations in high-quality training data and computational efficiency.
