Meta launches Forum app for Facebook Groups with AI
Meta has recently released Forum, a standalone app linked to Facebook Groups that lets users sign in with Facebook, post under nicknames, and use AI to pull answers from discussions across groups.
The app keeps groups on Facebook, and posts made in Forum also appear in the related Facebook groups, while an AI assistant offers tools for group admins to handle moderation.
Forum revives Meta’s earlier attempt at a groups app after Facebook launched one in 2014 and shut it in 2017, and follows the recent Instants launch as the company pushes out more standalone apps.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Meta’s new app is a cautious test, not a wide release
- Forum fits a broader plan at Meta. The company could build as many as 50 new apps with smaller teams through AI-driven efficiency, said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Meta 1.
- Forum arrived quietly as a public test. At first, it was available only in Apple’s App Store in the United States 2.
- Its absence in the European Union (EU) stands out. Meta faces obligations under the Digital Markets Act, an EU law that adds rules for large digital platforms, which can complicate even a test launch 2.
- The app is meant to give community discussions their own place, apart from Facebook’s main feed, which mixes posts from friends, business Pages, and algorithmic recommendations 3.
Small apps like Forum are Meta’s response to pressure over AI spending
- Forum’s AI tools are a small attempt to find product value while investors question Meta’s AI spending. That pressure helped drive a selloff that erased more than US$200 billion in market value 4.
- Meta spent nearly US$20 billion in the quarter, and it plans to build tens of gigawatts of AI infrastructure this decade through Meta Compute, a large-scale effort to expand the computing capacity needed for AI systems 4, 5.
- Meta still has not explained how those AI investments will turn into returns. OpenAI is bringing in US$20 billion a year in revenue, said Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI 4.
- Tests like Forum ask a simple question. Can AI deliver clear value for users and open a path to making money that supports Meta’s infrastructure push 6.
