Meta hires Apple AI executive Frank Chu

Meta is hiring Frank Chu, a senior Apple executive who led AI teams focused on cloud infrastructure, training, and search, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Chu will join Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) and work on a new MSL Infra team, which handles AI infrastructure.

He is the latest in a series of Apple AI engineers to move to Meta, following the earlier departure of Ruoming Pang, who created Apple’s AI models team.

Chu helped manage Apple’s large language models on cloud servers, oversaw some training, and was involved in efforts to develop search features for Siri and entertainment services.

Since July, at least six Apple employees working on AI models have joined Meta.

Despite the new hire, Meta is pausing most recruitment across MSL teams to review headcount plans, according to an internal memo.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Talent wars reveal AI development as the new strategic battleground

Meta’s systematic recruitment of Apple AI executives demonstrates how companies are treating experienced AI talent as their most valuable competitive asset.

The social media giant has poached at least six Apple AI employees, including Ruoming Pang who received a $200 million compensation package and Frank Chu who managed Apple’s cloud infrastructure for large language models12.

Meta is specifically targeting Apple’s most senior AI leaders, including those who oversaw foundational systems like Siri’s search features and cloud-based model training1.

The scale of compensation reveals just how critical experienced AI leadership has become, with packages reaching nine figures for individuals who understand both the technical challenges and organizational complexities of deploying AI at scale2.

This pattern extends beyond individual hires to Meta’s broader $30 billion investment in AI talent and infrastructure3.

2️⃣ Strategic hiring cycles show companies balancing aggressive recruitment with operational discipline

Despite Meta’s high-profile talent acquisitions, the company simultaneously issued a hiring pause across its Superintelligence Labs teams, revealing a more nuanced approach to AI team building1.
