Meta eyes AI cloud to sell compute and hosted models
Meta is reportedly developing a cloud infrastructure business that would sell AI computing power and hosted AI models to customers.
The move could put Meta in competition with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and newer AI infrastructure specialists.
The effort would give Meta a way to make money from its AI buildout.
The company’s 2026 capital expenditure guidance is US$145 billion, after US$72.2 billion in capital spending last year.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg told shareholders that a Meta cloud business is “definitely on the table” if the company ends up with excess data center capacity.
He also said outside companies had asked Meta to offer an application programming interface, or API, service or sell computing capacity.
Beyond the hyperscalers, Meta could target the so-called neocloud market, including providers such as CoreWeave that sell graphics processing unit, or GPU, capacity for AI training and inference.
Meta is also considering selling access to raw computing capacity.
Google Cloud already lets customers fine-tune and deploy Llama models on its platform.
