Meta drops wording on business sites for AI training

Meta removed wording from its commercial terms that suggested it could use content from business accounts’ domains, web pages, or URLs to develop and train its products.

The language had raised concerns about web scraping and AI training.

Legal experts said the clause could be read as giving Meta permission to scrape publishers’ websites if those publishers had Meta business accounts.

Meta said the consolidated crawling terms applied only to its ads and business products, and that it updated the terms to make that clearer.

The company added that the revised language did not change how it uses web crawlers.

The News/Media Alliance, a US trade group representing news publishers, also responded to the changes in Meta’s commercial terms of use in a statement.
