Meta CEO: people without AI glasses may face disadvantage
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the company’s Q2 2025 earnings call that he expects glasses with AI to become a primary way people interact with AI in the future.
Meta, a US-based social technology company, has invested in developing smart glasses, including collaborations with Ray-Ban, allowing users to listen to music, take photos, and access Meta AI features.
Zuckerberg said that adding displays to these glasses could further expand their usefulness, offering capabilities like a holographic field of view.
He said that people without AI-enabled glasses may face a cognitive disadvantage compared to those who use such devices.
Meta’s Reality Labs division, which leads this research, has accumulated substantial losses since 2020.
Other companies, including OpenAI and various startups, are also exploring new consumer devices for AI interaction.
Zuckerberg believes glasses are well-positioned to blend both digital and physical experiences.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ AI glasses market shows explosive growth but remains tiny despite bold predictions
While Zuckerberg predicts people without AI glasses will face “cognitive disadvantage,” current adoption tells a different story.
Fewer than 5% of US adults currently own AI wearables, despite the Ray-Ban Meta glasses selling over 2 million units and driving 210% year-over-year growth in smart glasses shipments during 202412.
This creates a disconnect between Meta’s optimistic vision and market reality—even with significant percentage growth, the actual user base remains small.
The AI glasses market is projected to grow from $1.93 billion in 2024 to $8.26 billion by 2030, representing considerable expansion but still a fraction of the smartphone market3.
This suggests Zuckerberg’s timeline for AI glasses becoming essential may be overly optimistic, as mainstream adoption typically requires crossing much higher user thresholds than current levels indicate.
2️⃣ Meta faces intensifying competition despite early market leadership
