Zuckerberg says Meta made $200b AI bet without certainty
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on the Cheeky Pint podcast that the company committed to AI infrastructure spending last year without knowing whether it would pay off.
He recalled approving roughly “US$100 billion or US$200 billion” in spending. He also said he was unsure how users would respond to Muse, Meta’s recently launched personal AI assistant.
Muse has been publicly demonstrated controlling apps on a Mac, but the demonstration does not show whether the product has been widely rolled out.
The company released Muse Wonder, an AI model family pitched against OpenAI and Anthropic, on October 12.
Meta is due to report earnings after the market closes on October 21. Last quarter, the company reported its lowest free cash flow in years, helping send the stock down 8%.
Investors remain concerned about spending. Meta previously raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to US$125 billion to US$145 billion.
That range covers total capital spending, not AI alone. Peers including Alphabet have also announced infrastructure spending plans.
