Meta, Broadcom back $125m AI chip hub at UCLA

Broadcom, Meta, Applied Materials, GlobalFoundries, and Synopsys will fund a US$125 million Semiconductor Hub at UCLA Samueli School of Engineering in California over five years.

The program will support AI chip research and workforce training.

UCLA said faculty and students will work with the companies on chip design software, manufacturing projects.

Doctoral students will also get yearlong internships with the partners.

The hub is meant to help move research into the market faster as chip complexity rises, and the industry faces uncertainty over how AI will reshape semiconductor development.

  • UCLA’s initiative sits within a larger campaign to rebuild U.S. semiconductor manufacturing, which dropped from 37% of global capacity in 1990 to 12% 1.
