Meta to block Facebook, Instagram for Australian teens by Dec 10

Meta will block users under 16 in Australia from accessing Instagram, Facebook, and Threads by December 10, 2025 to comply with a new national law restricting teen use of social media.

The company has started notifying users it believes are aged 13 to 15 that their accounts will be deactivated, with the process beginning December 4, 2025.

Meta will also block new sign-ups from anyone under 16 during this period.

The company said it will use several age assurance methods to verify user ages, and will only request more information if there are doubts about a user’s age.

Affected users can update their contact details specifically to be notified when they turn 16, download their data, or delete their accounts.
