Meta acquires US chip startup Rivos: sources
Meta is acquiring chip startup Rivos, which is developing its own GPU, according to a person familiar with the deal.
The move aims to strengthen Meta’s internal semiconductor development for its AI infrastructure.
Meta already has a team working on AI chips but still spends billions annually on GPUs from suppliers like Nvidia.
Financial terms of the Rivos deal were not disclosed; Rivos was reportedly seeking new funding at a US$2 billion valuation in August, according to The Information.
Meta’s acquisition comes as it seeks to cut costs and reduce reliance on Nvidia products while pursuing the goal of “superintelligence.”
Meta has pledged to spend as much as US$72 billion in capital expenditures this year, including AI infrastructure, and recently raised US$29 billion to build a massive data center in Louisiana.
