Mercedes-Benz spins off chip team into new company

Mercedes-Benz has spun off its Silicon Valley chip engineers into a new company called Athos Silicon, based in Santa Clara, California.

The team had worked at Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America for five years.

Athos will receive intellectual property and an undisclosed investment from Mercedes-Benz, which will remain a minority shareholder.

Athos will focus on developing energy-efficient chips for self-driving cars and EVs, using “chiplets” that reduce power consumption.

CEO Charnjiv Bangar said the chips could use 10 to 20x less power than traditional setups.

Athos intends to operate independently, collaborate with multiple automakers, and seek additional funding from investors.
