🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ MENA venture ecosystem shows resilience amid global venture capital contractions

The recent surge in MENA venture investment stands out against a broader downward trend in emerging markets.

While VC investments in emerging markets plummeted by over 40% in 2024, MENA’s decline was less severe at 29%, demonstrating the region’s relative resilience1.

This performance is particularly notable when viewed against the historical context of emerging markets venture capital, which expanded dramatically from $1.7 billion in 2014 to peak at $25.9 billion in 2021 before contracting2.

MENA’s more moderate decline can be attributed to its strong local funding sources, particularly sovereign wealth funds like Saudi Arabia’s PIF, which provide a buffer against global investment pullbacks3.

The region’s venture ecosystem has evolved significantly over the past decade, with the total number of unique investors growing from just 218 in 2014 to over 1,100 in 2024, creating a more diverse capital base2.

The current $678 million raised in Q1 2024 reflects this resilience, showing how the ecosystem continues to mature despite challenging global conditions.

2️⃣ Saudi Arabia’s emerging dominance reshapes regional investment dynamics

Saudi Arabia’s position as the top destination for MENA venture capital marks a significant shift in regional power dynamics within the tech ecosystem.
