Meituan’s delivery firm Keeta launches services in Qatar

Keeta, an international arm of Chinese on-demand delivery firm Meituan, has launched its services in Qatar.

This marks Keeta’s entry into the Gulf state of Qatar as part of Meituan’s global expansion.

Jane Liu, general manager of Keeta Qatar, said the company plans to work with local businesses to provide delivery services aligned with Qatar’s Vision 2030.

Meituan’s technology reportedly handles over 150 million daily peak orders for more than 770 million users globally.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ International expansion success depends heavily on local market adaptation

Keeta enters a Qatar food delivery market that already has established local players like Talabat, Snoonu, and Rafeeq, each serving different consumer segments with tailored approaches12.

This competitive landscape offers valuable lessons from past international expansion failures, particularly Groupon’s unsuccessful entry into China in 2011, where cultural missteps and lack of local understanding led to $46.4 million in losses against only $2.1 million in revenue within seven months3.

Groupon’s failure stemmed from hiring primarily American employees without local market knowledge and failing to adapt their business model to Chinese consumer preferences and price sensitivity3.

The Qatar market shows similar dynamics, where successful players like Snoonu focus specifically on local businesses and Rafeeq offers personalized support with no minimum order requirements—features designed for local consumer preferences1.

2️⃣ Qatar’s strategic economic transformation creates opportunities for digital service providers

Qatar’s aggressive pursuit of $100 billion in foreign direct investment by 2030 positions the country as particularly welcoming to international digital service companies like Keeta4.

The 2019 Foreign Investment Law allows fully foreign-owned companies in most sectors, removing previous ownership restrictions that might have complicated market entry for international firms54.

This regulatory environment supports Qatar’s National Vision 2030 goal of building a knowledge-based economy and reducing oil dependency, creating natural alignment with Keeta’s digital delivery services4.

Qatar’s recent infrastructure investments, particularly around the 2022 FIFA World Cup, have established the physical foundation necessary for delivery services while simultaneously creating a more internationally-oriented consumer base4.
