Meituan launches 24/7 shopping with 30-minute delivery in China

Meituan has launched a new instant retail brand named Meituan Shangou (美团闪购, meaning Meituan Instant Buy) across China. The platform provides 24-hour shopping services through the Meituan app, with deliveries expected in approximately 30 minutes.

Customers can select from a range of products, including fresh produce, snacks, electronics, beauty items, and pet care supplies.

This initiative is designed to address the increasing demand for fast and convenient shopping options in the country.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Evolution of China’s instant retail follows seven years of “new retail” transformation

Meituan’s Shangou launch represents a significant evolution of Jack Ma’s “New Retail” concept first introduced in 2016, which emphasized merging online, offline, and logistics for integrated shopping experiences 1.

What began as an integration strategy has now evolved into a speed-focused battleground where 30-minute delivery is the new standard, reflecting changing consumer expectations in China’s digital economy.

The instant retail market demonstrates remarkable growth potential, projected to reach RMB 1.2 trillion by 2025 and expanding at a 25% compound rate to reach RMB 3.6 trillion by 2030 23.

This transformation reflects the broader digitization of Chinese commerce, where consumers engage in mobile payments 60 times more frequently than U.S. consumers, creating a foundation for frictionless instant shopping experiences 1.

Behind this consumer-facing speed is massive infrastructure investment, with Meituan operating over 30,000 lightning warehouses specifically designed to support rapid delivery capabilities 4.

2️⃣ Generational shift drives demand for immediacy and convenience

The rise of instant retail in China is closely linked to younger consumers’ expectations, with over 50% of post-95 consumers now expecting same-day delivery for their online purchases 2.

Gen Z consumers show a particularly strong inclination toward impulse buying, with 70% interested in purchasing directly through social media—significantly higher than the global average of 44% 5.

This demographic shift creates a market environment where platforms must adapt to expectations for both rapid gratification and seamless digital experiences across multiple product categories.

The demand for instant delivery has expanded well beyond food to include everything from electronics to beauty products, reflecting a fundamental shift in how younger Chinese consumers approach shopping across all categories.
