Meituan, JD.com help export firms shift to domestic market

Chinese food delivery and on-demand services provider Meituan has introduced measures to assist export-reliant businesses transitioning to domestic markets.

This initiative comes as trade tensions between China and the United States escalate, affecting Chinese exporters.

Meituan announced on its official WeChat account that it aims to help businesses adapt to domestic demand by providing support in marketing, operations, and delivery.

The company will also offer fee exemptions.

Additionally, Meituan plans to create a system that integrates domestic and foreign trade to enable exported goods to reach local consumers.

This initiative aligns with efforts by other Chinese firms, such as JD.com and Alibaba Group’s Freshippo, which have also launched programs to assist exporters entering the domestic market.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ E-commerce platforms leverage China’s domestic market magnitude to counter trade tensions

The scale of China’s domestic market has become a critical buffer against trade tensions.

China’s consumer market reached $6.4 trillion in 2022, with e-commerce accounting for 27.2% of retail sales, creating massive absorption capacity for redirected exports 1.

With the world’s largest e-commerce ecosystem generating over $3 trillion in annual sales and representing more than half of global online transactions, platforms like Meituan and JD.com have significant distribution capabilities 2.

China’s consumer class is projected to grow from 899 million in 2022 to 935 million in 2023, providing exporters with an alternative customer base nearly three times the entire U.S. population 1.

This pivot leverages China’s established logistics networks that have evolved alongside e-commerce, with sophisticated delivery systems already designed to reach consumers across the country efficiently.

JD.com’s pledge to secure 200 billion yuan ($27.47 billion) of export goods for domestic consumption demonstrates how these platforms can deploy their infrastructure to address macroeconomic challenges.

2️⃣ Current initiatives continue China’s long pattern of trade adaptation strategies
