Meesho to appeal $1.5m tax demand in India
Bengaluru-based ecommerce platform Meesho will challenge a 142.9 million rupees (US$1.51 million) GST demand after a Mumbai appellate authority upheld the claim.
The order relates to alleged non-collection of tax collected at source on some seller transactions made outside the platform in 2020 under Meesho’s reseller model.
Authorities upheld the demand but dropped a separate penalty.
The notice follows a nearly 15 billion rupees (US$159 million) income tax demand in March over alleged underreporting for FY2022-23.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The latest GST notice is a small part of a much larger, recurring tax battle
- Beyond the 142.9 million rupees (US$1.51 million) GST demand, Meesho is also contesting a 15 billion rupees (US$159 million) income tax demand for the 2023-24 assessment year 1.
- The company is also challenging a similar income tax demand from the previous assessment year, and that case is still before the court 1.
- The High Court of Karnataka granted an interim stay on the earlier notice, which means these disputes can stretch over long periods 1.
Meesho’s tax troubles signal tighter checks across India’s ecommerce sector
- The case involves a scrutiny assessment, which is a detailed review of a company’s accounts to check its reported income and deductions 1.
- Large tax claims can make investors more cautious, especially in digital and ecommerce businesses where accounting structures face close review 2.
- The added pressure comes as Meesho’s net loss widened to 4.9 billion rupees (US$51.9 million) in Q3 FY26 even with revenue growth 1.
- Ongoing tax disputes and continued losses may weigh on investor sentiment, which could cool interest in other tech companies with similar profiles 2.
